An initial consultation includes thorough questioning about your main symptoms and your general health. I will look at your tongue and feel the pulse on both wrists. If you are presenting with pain, this area will be examined.
Before any treatment takes place, I will explain what will be done and why. Needles are single-use, sterile and disposable and are inserted by tapping through a guide tube, as shown. Typically, needles stay in for a minimum of 20 minutes.
For some musculo-skeletal pain conditions where there is significant and chronic muscle tightness, cupping is an effective way to bring rapid relief. It is a strong treatment and is not suitable in all circumstances. Cupping can leave temporary marking which looks like bruising but is, in fact, a release of toxins from tight-held muscle tissue up to the skin. These marks will disappear in 7-14 days.
The burning of the herb Chinese mugwort is an alternative way of treating acupuncture points. It is warming and strengthening and people who need moxibustion typically enjoy the sensation.
The burning substance is never in direct contact with the skin but is used on the needle, in stick-on cones or as a hand-held stick directed at the acupuncture points. Traditional moxa is very smoky so I use a charcoal version which is smokeless.
On the whole, short-lived conditions will respond quicker than ones which have been going on for years. Some conditions can't be cured, but a welcome improvement in someone's functioning may still be possible. I don't ask people to book courses of treatments. We decide between us what's best based on how much benefit you are gaining and how much further improvement I think may be possible.
